Working with Files and Directories

Getting Started Guide
Files that KDE recognizes as text files use the icon shown in Figure 51 within file
manager windows:
FIGURE 51. The file manager assigns icons (such as this text file icon) to items in
your file system.
If you want to view a file in a text editor, but KDE doesn’t recognize it as a text
file, you’ll see a dialog box when you click on the icon. The dialog box asks what
application you want to use to open the file that you have selected. To open the
file in the Text Editor, enter the application name kedit (all lowercase) and
choose the OK button.
If you have permission to modify a file, you can edit it and save it in the Text Edi-
tor. Standard graphical commands apply to the Text Editor:
•
Use the arrow keys to move around the text (including Page Up and Page
Down keys for long files)
•
Use the Shift key with the arrows, or the mouse pointer, to select text
•
Use the items on the Edit menu or the standard keys (Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C,
Ctrl+V) to Cut, Copy or Paste selected text
•
Use backspace or delete to erase the selected text, or the character at the
cursor location
•
Choose File|Save to update the file on disk
•
Choose File|Save As to assign a new name to the file you are editing
•
Choose File|Print to print out a copy of the file (but see the next section to
set up the printer first)
•
Choose Edit|Search to find a word within the file
Additional features are available from the other menu items in the Text Editor.
To start a new text file, follow these steps:
1.
Click the Text Editor icon on the Panel or choose Applications|Text
Editor on the main menu. The Text Editor opens with a blank screen.
